A new formulation of botulinum toxin A was as effective as Botox for improving facial wrinkles.
A recently developed form of botulinum toxin A, incobotulinumtoxinA (Bocouture/Xeomin, Merz), contains just naked botulinum neurotoxin, without associated complexing proteins. It is not yet approved in the U.S. Two recent studies, funded by the manufacturer, compared this new agent with onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox, Allergan).
The first, a well-designed, randomized, controlled trial in 381 patients, compared both agents for muscle-movement–related wrinkles of the glabella and forehead. Patients were randomized to receive 24 units (0.6 cc) of one or the other toxin, injected in the same 5-point pattern on the forehead.
