Targetoid hemosiderotic hemangioma was first described in the literature about 25 years ago; since then, the term hobnail hemangioma (HH) was coined to underscore the prominence of the endothelial lining of the vessels in this entity. The authors of two retrospective studies used immunohistochemical staining to investigate the origin of these benign vascular lesions.
Trindade and colleagues studied 52 adults with HH. Immunohistochemical staining for Wilms tumor-1 (WT1), human herpesvirus 8 latent nuclear antigen, D2-40 antibody, and Ki-67 was negative for WT1, HPV 8, and Ki-67 in all patients.
