Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) causes 20% of all skin cancer–related deaths. Podoplanin is up-regulated in SCCs, enhancing migration and invasion. These authors explored a potential role for D2-40, a monoclonal antibody to human podoplanin, as a prognostic marker.
Researchers performed immunohistochemical staining for D2-40 in 101 excised cSCC samples (51 that had metastasized [MSCC] and 50 that had not [non-MSCC]) and evaluated the extent and intensity of the stain in tumor cells and the presence or absence of lymphatic invasion.
