Mucormycosis, or zygomycosis, refers to opportunistic infection of the skin by fungi of the family Mucoraceae (genera Rhizopus, Mucor, and Absidia). Infection can be primary from exogenous infection in immunocompromised patients or secondary by visceral spread. In addition to cutaneous infections, rhinocerebral, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal forms are also found. The authors of this study explored differences in the histologic findings associated with this infection in 13 patients (median age, 51 years) with mucormycosis.
