Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are extremely common malignancies in the U.S., second only in incidence to basal cell carcinomas. Because of their frequency, they are not entered into cancer registries, and therefore, accurate information on the clinical behavior of cutaneous SCCs has been difficult to obtain. To address this important issue, investigators reviewed reports of incidence and rates of nodal metastases and mortality in the U.S. Studies from single departments and small institutions were excluded from the analysis as unlikely to accurately reflect outcomes in the population at large.
