Long disease duration, extent of colitis, and family history of colorectal cancer are recognized risk factors for cancer in patients with chronic ulcerative colitis (UC). More recently, primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) also has been reported as a probable risk factor for colorectal carcinoma in these patients. In this study, researchers examined the association between colorectal cancer and backwash ileitis among 590 consecutive patients with UC who underwent proctocolectomy.
