The most frequent complication of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use is gastrointestinal bleeding. In multiple studies, researchers have evaluated various approaches to preventing this complication, but few have looked beyond acid suppression for treatment of acute bleeding events. Sucralfate speeds duodenal ulcer healing and prevents bleeding from stress-related mucosal disease, but data are limited on the role of sucralfate for treating NSAID-associated bleeding.
