Conventional treatment for patients who present with esophageal food impaction calls for removal of the bolus and dilation of the esophageal stricture causing the focal obstruction. Acute esophageal food impaction recently has been identified as an initial manifestation of eosinophilic esophagitis (EE). EE is defined histologically by the presence of more than 20 eosinophiles per high-powered field (HPF). In this retrospective report from a single community-based gastroenterology practice, the authors evaluated endoscopic features of 31 consecutive patients who presented with esophageal food impaction.
Esophageal biopsy specimens were obtained either when the food bolus was removed or when elective endoscopy was performed 4 to 8 weeks later.…
