Compared with standard wire-based esophageal pH monitoring systems, wireless systems allow more patient comfort and extension of the pH monitoring period from 24 hours to 48 hours. Early studies using simultaneous wireless and catheter-based pH monitoring demonstrated concordance in quantifying esophageal acid exposure, but results of these comparison validation studies are available only as abstracts. These researchers compared the wireless Bravo pH monitoring system (Medtronic, Inc.) with the Mark III Digitrapper, the most widely used catheter system (Medtronic, Inc.), in 25 asymptomatic volunteers. The manufacturer contributed the devices.
