Capsule endoscopy has revolutionized endoscopic imaging of the small intestine, but it is limited by rapid transit time. The standard capsule endoscope used for the small intestine records single images at a rate of two images per second. A newer capsule for esophageal imaging has two imaging ports and takes 14 pictures per second.
In a multicenter international study, researchers compared the diagnostic accuracy of esophageal capsule endoscopy (ECE) with that of standard upper endoscopy (EGD) in 109 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
