Population-based studies have been conducted in Canada, Scandinavia, and Israel to evaluate the risk for colorectal cancer in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Only now, though, has such a study been conducted in the U.S.
Researchers in Olmsted County, Minnesota, evaluated data from a population-based cohort of 692 IBD patients who were followed for a median of 14 years. Among 378 subjects with ulcerative colitis (UC), 6 developed colorectal cancer, compared with an expected 5.38 (standardized incidence ratio, 1.1; 95% CI, 0.4–2.4).
