Gallstone-related hospitalizations are common in the U.S. Women are at higher risk for developing gallstones, especially during pregnancy or the postpartum period.
In this retrospective population-based study, an investigator used linked data (for 1987–2001) from the Washington State birth-certificate database and a hospital-discharge database to identify all women who either received diagnoses of biliary-tract disease during their delivery hospitalizations or had biliary-related hospitalizations during the first postpartum year.
