Conflicting data exist on whether women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have higher risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes than do women without IBD. To evaluate this issue further, investigators conducted a meta-analysis of 12 studies that involved 3907 women with IBD (63% with Crohn disease [CD]; 36% with ulcerative colitis [UC]) and 320,531 controls.
IBD was associated with an increased risk for premature birth (<37 weeks’ gestation; odds ratio, 1.87; 95% CI, 1.52–2.31), low birth weight (<2500 g; OR, 2.1; 95% CI, 1.38–3.91), and cesarean section (OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 1.26–1.79).
