Whether statin use protects against colorectal cancer is unclear — study results have been mixed. To analyze this suspected association further, researchers conducted a nested case-control study on data from patients in 454 general practices in the U.K. The study population consisted of 5686 case patients with colorectal cancers that were diagnosed from 1995 through 2005 and 24,982 cancer-free controls, matched for age, sex, and practice. The study was designed to measure the effects of statins, any nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitors, and aspirin on colorectal cancer.
