PPI-Associated Interstitial Nephritis

This rare but serious complication of PPI exposure usually resolves after PPI withdrawal.

Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are potent acid suppressants, are the second-most widely prescribed medication group in the U.S. and often are prescribed for patients with acid-related diseases. Along with this large exposure index comes an excellent safety profile derived from data on long-term widespread use.

Two researchers conducted an extensive review and independently collected and assessed data on one rare but serious adverse effect associated with PPI use — PPI-associated interstitial nephritis (ISN).
