Although a clear link exists between gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and obesity, the association between GER and other obesity-related complications, such as metabolic syndrome, has not been explored. Metabolic syndrome — which afflicts more than 50 million people in the U.S. — is characterized by abdominal obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, and prothrombotic and proinflammatory states.
