Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is characterized by solid-food dysphagia, strictured esophagus marked by multiple intraesophageal rings and trachea-like appearance, histologic presence of ≥15 eosinophils per high-power field (HPF), and marked “crepe paper–like” mucosal friability. The esophageal mucosa of EoE patients often tears simply from the passage of an endoscope. Endoscopists who perform esophageal dilations in these patients report marked postdilation mucosal disruption, and many reports express concern about increased perforation risk.
