Photodynamic Therapy for BE-Related High-Grade Dysplasia

In patients who are receiving omeprazole for treatment of BE-related HGD, photodynamic therapy can achieve complete ablation of HGD and delay progression to cancer.

Nonsurgical interventions, including photodynamic therapy, are of interest for treating dysplasia related to Barrett esophagus. In a previous report, researchers described results from an international, randomized trial in which 208 patients with BE-related high-grade dysplasia (HGD) received omeprazole (20 mg twice daily), either alone or with photodynamic therapy involving porfimer sodium injections (Journal Watch Gastroenterology Dec 13 2005). Two-year results favored the use of photodynamic therapy for complete ablation of HGD. Now, researchers report 5-year results from this study.
