Nonsurgical interventions, including photodynamic therapy, are of interest for treating dysplasia related to Barrett esophagus. In a previous report, researchers described results from an international, randomized trial in which 208 patients with BE-related high-grade dysplasia (HGD) received omeprazole (20 mg twice daily), either alone or with photodynamic therapy involving porfimer sodium injections (Journal Watch Gastroenterology Dec 13 2005). Two-year results favored the use of photodynamic therapy for complete ablation of HGD. Now, researchers report 5-year results from this study.
