Narrow-band imaging (NBI) uses only the blue portion of the visible-light spectrum during endoscopy. Imaged in blue light, blood vessels on the surface of polyps, particularly adenomas, generate a sharp color contrast with the surrounding normal mucosa, which can enhance detection of lesions. NBI has been proposed for two uses in the colon: improving detection of polyps and enhancing endoscopic differentiation of neoplastic from nonneoplastic polyps. In two studies from Europe, investigators examined the efficacy of NBI for adenoma detection.
