In the U.S., nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of abnormal liver tests; however, few NAFLD patients develop inflammation and, more important, fibrosis, and thereby are at high risk for progressive disease. Currently, only liver biopsy can differentiate between simple steatosis and steatosis with fibrosis. In the current study, investigators validated two panels of serum markers that could be used to predict fibrosis in a cohort of NAFLD patients.
