When the pancreatic duct is completely transected, the portion of the pancreas that is upstream from the disruption (i.e., toward the tail) becomes disconnected from the portion of the pancreas that is downstream from the disruption (i.e., toward the head). The viable upstream portion of the pancreas continues to secrete juices, resulting in pseudocysts and fistulas, unless the drainage is redirected endoscopically or surgically into the gut, the disconnected pancreas is resected, or the disconnected pancreas atrophies. In this study, researchers describe the long-term outcomes of endoscopic and surgical therapy for patients with disconnected pancreatic tail syndrome (DPTS).
