Few data are available, especially in the U.S., to indicate that elevated serum aminotransferase levels in asymptomatic adults are predictive of early mortality. To address this gap, researchers conducted a prospective study among all adults who were living in Olmstead County, Minnesota, in 1995 and had at least one healthcare visit (of any type) during that year.
Of the 54,586 study participants, 18,401 had their aspartate aminotransferase levels measured during 1995, and 6823 had their alanine aminotransferase levels measured that same year.
