Patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) frequently report a history of atopic diathesis (asthma, dermatitis, or allergic rhinitis). Although this association has been documented in the literature, the atopy was typically self-reported by patients and not determined by objective testing (Gastrointest Endosc 2004; 59:355).
To determine the extent of allergic sensitization in adults with EoE, investigators completed formal allergy testing in 23 patients with biopsy-proven EoE (median age, 34; 16 men). They determined allergic sensitization to both food-associated and environmental allergens and measured serum IgE levels.
