Recent data have shown that risk for gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) rises after treatment for acute coronary syndromes (JW Gastroenterol Jun 20 2008). The frequency and effect of GIB in acute ischemic stroke patients have not been studied well.
To assess the clinical consequences of GIB after ischemic stroke, investigators in Canada reviewed the records of 6853 consecutive patients with ischemic stroke who were admitted to 11 Ontario hospitals during a 3-year period. Stroke severity was measured using the Canadian Neurological Scale (CNS). Multivariable regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for GIB after ischemic stroke and the relation between GIB and death or dependence at the time of discharge.
