Cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) show normal mental and neurologic function on standard clinical examination, but neuropsychological test results are abnormal. These patients can have difficulty in safely performing routine activities, such as driving. The pathogenesis of MHE is thought to be similar to that of overt hepatic encephalopathy. Researchers in India recently evaluated the efficacy of lactulose and probiotics in treating cirrhotic patients with MHE.
