A substantial proportion (20% to 50%) of capsule endoscopy (CE) examinations are not completed because the capsule fails to reach the cecum before the unit’s battery expires (Gastrointest Endosc 2004; 60:959). Delayed gastric emptying is a common contributor to this problem. Investigators recently studied whether keeping patients in a right lateral position (RLP) after ingestion of the capsule reduces its gastric transit time (GTT).
The single-center, randomized, controlled trial involved 60 patients who were undergoing CE for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or weight loss.
