Standard-resolution endoscopy typically is used for surveillance in patients with Barrett esophagus, but this technique often fails to identify early dysplastic or neoplastic changes. To compensate for this limitation, gastroenterologists often perform multiple random biopsies during the procedure. In the present study, researchers evaluated an alternative approach: using high-resolution endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (NBI) to identify potential areas of neoplasia and dysplasia and to direct targeted biopsies of those areas.
