Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) often are used for prolonged periods to prevent symptom recurrence in patients with acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. However, such long-term suppression of gastric acid can reduce calcium absorption and might impair bone homeostasis.
To evaluate a possible association between PPIs and fracture risk, investigators performed a retrospective matched cohort study using a large administrative-claims database. Canadian patients with fractures of the hip, wrist, or vertebrae that occurred between April 1996 and March 2004 (15,792 cases) were matched with 47,289 controls based on age, sex, and comorbidities. Records were reviewed for use of PPIs.
