Endoscopic therapy often is used to treat symptomatic pancreas divisum, but previous studies suggest that the response rate might vary according to the presenting symptoms. In particular, minor papilla endotherapy (MPE) seems to be more effective in patients with recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP) than in those with chronic pancreatitis (CP) or chronic abdominal pain (CAP).
To evaluate this possibility further, clinicians at a tertiary care referral center in Colorado have reviewed outcomes data from 57 patients who had undergone MPE for symptomatic pancreas divisum. Patients were classified according to their symptoms as follows:
