Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is a frequent cause for hospitalization, but such bleeding does not recur in 80% of patients. Various scoring systems have been developed to identify patients with low risk for rebleeding so that they can be treated without hospitalization.
Investigators in the U.K. evaluated the Glasgow-Blatchford bleeding score (GBS) and compared its ability to identify UGIB patients who could be treated as outpatients with that of the Rockall scoring system. They prospectively collected data for both scoring systems on consecutive UGIB patients from four hospitals during a period of 3–12 months.
