Approximately one third of all patients who undergo cholecystectomy have persistent pain after surgery. To determine whether bile microlithiasis might be a cause of postcholecystectomy pain, and whether such pain would respond to ursodeoxycholic acid (urso) therapy, researchers performed a randomized, prospective study in postcholecystectomy patients who had crystals in their bile.
These U.S. patients had right upper quadrant abdominal pain (particularly after meals).
