Tenofovir was approved by the FDA in August 2008 for the treatment of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) monoinfection. How does tenofovir’s efficacy compare with that of adefovir in this population?
Researchers performed two double-blind, phase III, randomized, industry-sponsored trials to compare the 48-week efficacy of tenofovir (300 mg daily) with that of adefovir (10 mg daily) in patients with chronic HBV infection. One study involved 266 patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive HBV, and the other involved 375 patients with HBeAg-negative HBV.
