Superficial cancers of the stomach and esophagus are candidates for treatment using endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Although the cancer recurrence rate in expert centers is low, local recurrence does occur. To determine the factors that predict recurrence of gastric cancers after ESD, investigators reviewed the results of 306 Japanese patients who were treated in a single center and followed for a median of 26 months.
Complete tumor resection, determined by pathologic examination, was achieved in 246 patients (80.4%). Of the remaining 60 patients (19.6%), tumors recurred in 7 patients (11.6%), 6 of whom were treated with surgical resection; the remaining patient underwent a second ESD.
