Cholecystectomy is considered a risk factor for colorectal cancer, but the association between gallstones (cholelithiasis) and colorectal adenomas has not been well studied.
In this study from Japan, 4458 asymptomatic people drawn from an annual colonoscopy screening survey underwent ultrasounds of the gallbladder, followed by screening colonoscopies. Asymptomatic gallstones were detected in 206 patients, and 63 had prior cholecystectomies. Adenomas were more prevalent in patients with cholelithiasis than in those with normal gallbladders (29.6% vs. 17.7%; P<0.001).
