Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a common chronic liver disorder that can progress to cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Therapeutic options are limited, but thiazolidinediones seem promising, given their insulin-sensitizing, antifibrotic, and anti-inflammatory properties. A previous 6-month trial of pioglitazone among diabetic patients with NASH was encouraging (JW Dec 13 2006), and now, investigators have conducted two 12-month trials of thiazolidinediones for NASH — one of rosiglitazone and the other of pioglitazone.
