Recent studies evaluating whether patients with hyperplastic polyps might be at risk for subsequent development of adenomas have yielded inconsistent results. The current study used data from the Polyp Prevention Trial to test whether patients who had both hyperplastic polyps and adenomas had a higher risk for subsequent adenomas than those with only baseline adenomas.
Participants in the Polyp Prevention Trial all had at least one histologically confirmed adenomatous polyp removed during the 6-month period before randomization. They underwent a clearing colonoscopy approximately 1 year after randomization to remove any lesions missed at the qualifying colonoscopy, and then a third colonoscopy was performed at the end of a 3-year follow-up. …
