Participants in most studies of acute nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) are recruited from outpatient populations. However, early studies have suggested that patients whose bleeding occurs while they are hospitalized have higher mortality (Am J Med 1998; 104:349). Investigators in Canada retrospectively evaluated data for inpatients and outpatients collected through the Canadian Registry of Patients with Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding Undergoing Endoscopy (RUGBE). They compared the demographics, care, and outcomes of 1395 patients who bled prior to admission (outpatients) with that of 469 patients whose bleeding occurred while they were in the hospital for other indications (inpatients).
