Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) has become standard therapy in Asian countries that have a high incidence of early gastric cancer. Such cancer is found less commonly in Western countries, with fewer studies to document its outcomes.
Investigators in Germany retrospectively reviewed the results of EMR in 43 patients who underwent the procedure for early gastric cancer. Long-term follow-up data were available for 39 patients.
Thirty-eight patients had complete remissions after a mean of 1.3 endoscopic procedures. Major complications occurred in six (15%) patients and minor complications in seven (18%).
