Despite advances in endoscopic and pharmacologic therapy, short-term mortality among patients with bleeding peptic ulcers remains substantial. Multiple scoring systems — such as the Rockall score — have been devised to predict mortality in patients with acute nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding, but none is specific for patients with peptic ulcers that feature high-risk stigmata.
