We know very little about the natural history of gallbladder polyps. Retrospective data suggest that polyps >1 cm can undergo malignant transformation, but smaller polyps are generally considered benign. Now, Italian researchers have elucidated the pathogenetic potential of small gallbladder polyps (SGPs).
The single-center, prospective study involved 56 consecutive patients who had ultrasonically diagnosed gallbladder polyps <10 mm. Of these patients, 32 had multiple polyps. Mean polyp size was 5.3 mm; the largest lesions were 8 mm in two patients, and the smallest were 3 mm in four patients. No patients had specific biliary pain.
