When endoscopic therapy for bleeding peptic ulcers fails, arterial embolization can be a less-hazardous alternative to surgery. However, most studies of this approach have not identified factors predictive of success or failure.
Investigators in France addressed this issue with a retrospective study of 60 consecutive patients with refractory bleeding peptic ulcers who were referred to a single center for angiographic therapy during a 10-year period. The procedure was technically successful (i.e., cessation of extravasation on the postembolization arteriography) in 57 patients.
