Overt or occult bleeding from a presumed small bowel source presents a difficult clinical situation. If upper and lower endoscopies fail to identify the source of gastrointestinal bleeding, the intervening small bowel must be examined. Capsule endoscopy (CE) is a useful diagnostic tool for imaging the small bowel, but it does not allow for simultaneous treatment of any lesions detected. Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) provides a potential diagnostic and therapeutic tool in this arena, but we know little about long-term outcomes, in terms of subsequent recurrent bleeding associated with the procedure.
