Gastric fundic gland polyps (FGPs) are associated with familial adenomatous polyposis. Are FGPs also associated with colorectal adenomas and, therefore, does their presence warrant performing a colonoscopy? To find out, investigators retrospectively reviewed data from 103,385 patients who recently underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy at outpatient endoscopy centers; 78,801 of the patients had undergone at least one gastric biopsy.
One or more FGPs were diagnosed in 6084 patients; only 3 had previously known familial adenomatous polyposis.
