Several studies have suggested that factors such as age, high body-mass index, metabolic syndrome, and abnormal aminotransferases are associated with disease progression in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). However, most were single-biopsy studies and, thus, cross-sectional in nature. To further establish fibrosis-progression risk factors in NASH patients, investigators assessed pooled, primary data from longitudinal, histological-based studies involving patients who had undergone two liver biopsies at least 1 year apart.
