Prior epidemiologic results have suggested a possible association between chronic, long-term use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) and excess risk for osteoporosis-related fractures (JW Gastroenterol Oct 3 2008). To further evaluate whether chronic PPI use is linked with osteoporosis, as defined by bone-mineral density (BMD) testing, investigators used the Manitoba Provincial Bone Mineral Density Database to compare approximately 5800 patients who had osteoporosis of the hip or spine (according to dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry [DXA] scanning) and approximately 15,800 controls who did not have osteoporosis.
