Although hepatic adenomas are usually benign, in a minority of cases, they can bleed or undergo malignant transformation. Determining when to resect hepatic adenomas to avoid these complications can be difficult, especially in patients with multiple lesions. Some investigators have suggested that lesions >5 cm should be resected and that patients with >10 lesions should undergo liver transplantation.
To further elucidate the adenoma characteristics associated with complications such as hemorrhage and malignancy, researchers evaluated outcomes of 122 patients who underwent resection of hepatic adenomas at a tertiary care center in France.
