The clinical approach to managing nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) has improved substantially thanks to recent advances in ulcer identification, risk stratification, endoscopic therapy, and pharmacologic therapy. To update 2003 consensus recommendations for managing UGIB patients, an international panel of 34 experts performed a systematic review of the medical literature up to October 2008.
Basing decisions on the strength of supporting evidence, panelists revised or added 34 recommendations for treating patients with nonvariceal UGIB.
