Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a common disorder, whose complications can result in hospitalization and death. Small studies have suggested that patients who have comorbid conditions have excess risk for PUD.
To identify independent risk factors for PUD, investigators evaluated data collected from 1997 to 2003 from >225,000 patients with or without PUD who were included in the National Health Interview Survey, a database of self-reported medical information gathered for the CDC by census takers.
