Recent population-based trial results have shown that colonoscopy is associated with low rates of serious complications and that potential risk factors for complications include older age and polypectomy (JW Gastroenterol Feb 27 2009). To study these associations further, investigators used data from the Clinical Outcomes Research Initiative (CORI) national endoscopic database to evaluate complications from screening and surveillance colonoscopies in 18,271 patients who were followed for 30 days. The following complications occurred:
Gastrointestinal bleeding requiring hospitalization: 34 patients (1.59 per 1000 exams)
Diverticulitis requiring hospitalization: 5 patients (0.23 per 1000 exams)
