Although primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is an uncommon cause of chronic liver disease, it is one of the major causes of cholestatic liver disease. Based on data obtained from new imaging modalities and recent treatment trials, guidelines for the diagnosis and management of PSC have been updated by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). Each recommendation was graded as 1 (strong) or 2 (weak), and the quality of evidence for each was graded as A (high), B (moderate), or C (low). Strong recommendations backed by high- or moderate-quality evidence (grades 1A and 1B) are summarized here.
